Steam Codes: The Dismal Battleborn

Battleborn, one of Gearbox’s huge hopes for this generation, is going down in flames as we speak. It’s population has been dwindling since its launch back in May 3 and hasn’t been able to change it up ever since then. It has become even more difficult for the Gearbox game to bounce back with Overwatch overshadowing (lol) it in every aspect and completely getting dominated in social media. Overwatch memes, jokes, PotGs, fan art, advertisements, and literally everything under the sun has been able to push Battleborn into obscurity. Adding more fuel to the fire, or, rather, the lack thereof, Battleborn, as essentially closer to a moba than Overwatch, has failed to make a dent in the moba-playing communities of LoL and Dota. Here on out, where is it supposed to go?

Screw Team Fortress 2, LoL, Dota, and CS:GO: the real fight is between Battleborn and Overwatch. But, at this point, it’s no contest! Overwatch has gone to soaring heights of popularity that none have ever imagined it ever reaching and Battleborn takes the opposite route into the shadows of deep obscurity. What went wrong for Battleborn? Certainly not the choice of having Steam codes, that’s for sure.

Marketing. Plain and simple.

Battleborn is not a horrible game. No, not by a long shot. In fact, compared to Overwatch, Battleborn has a lot more going for it as a game. With tons of content including different multiplayer game modes that aren’t only entrenched in the moba tradition, and a single player component that folks sorely want for Overwatch as well, it should have performed better.

But the very fact that Blizzard was able to hype up Overwatch to a degree that none could compete with is what sealed Battleborn’s fate. The only thing Overwatch can truly offer, other than the solid and stellar team-based gameplay, was its cast of extremely attractive characters. Battleborn was not able to do the same with their cast despite being uniquely awesome as well. Everybody knows who Tracer is, even if they don’t play Overwatch. But on the other end of the spectrum, I ask a couple of my friends who… well, I couldn’t really ask them if they knew who the Battleborn mascot is because I don’t even know who it is.

For a game that touts itself as a hero-based shooter, Gearbox failed to make anybody care about the heroes – even their own playerbase. At 800+ players on a Sunday night, that’s not an unfair assessment to make.

You see, Battleborn, a game you may not know exists, was once thought to be a top contender against the Overwatch hype. Being released only 21 days apart and with Battleborn having the headstart, Overwatch has catapulted into the stratosphere of popularity where it is sure to rest as one of the most powerful IPs in gaming history. Unfortunately, Battleborn is nowhere near that stardom.

But why?

Tracer is, undoubtedly, the most popular female character in 2016 as of today. And, with her popularity, has infinitely helped set up Overwatch as one of the best multiplayer games ever. Never mind whatever qualms you have with the game, whether they be lack of content or lack of a single player focus; Overwatch simply is just a fantastic game. But what does Tracer being an incredibly popular character have to do with Overwatch’s stellar gameplay?

To be honest? Nothing. Well, nothing directly. But it’s something Battleborn should have done.

Despite Battleborn having the story component within the game and a super interesting universe, it doesn’t exactly have the star power of any of Overwatch’s heroes that were introduced via Tracer. This is because Battleborn did not put out a mascot that the public would like. Gearbox doesn’t have any hero as generally appealing as Tracer who is cool, cute, sexy, and pretty much anything else you want her to be. Heroes in Battleborn are too stringent and appeal to specific niche interests in the character development department unlike Tracer and, apparently, the rest of the Overwatch cast.

For a hero-based game, they certainly did not take into consideration how folks needed to see their heroes as what they were and not what they could turn out to be in their stories. This is, I believe, the biggest weakness of Battleborn and why it was overtaken by the hype and power of Overwatch despite the backing of Steam account powers. Gearbox can still turn this around, not just through balancing and fixing their matchmaking, but embarking on a campaign to increase the popularity of their heroes beforehand. Just imagine; even before Overwatch was out of beta, there were more porn searches about the game than any other IP in the history of the internet. I’m just going to leave it at that.

Steam CD Key: Surpassing Contemporaries

Overwatch is getting released in but a few hours at the time of this writing! In celebration of its launch, let’s take a look at all the things that had transpired in the Overwatch betas through the months. Soldier: 76, unsurprisingly, is the most used offensive character in the betas, given that he’s pretty much the most basic hero in the game. To sum him up, he’s the aim-and-shoot kind of character and doesn’t require much adjusting to if you’re already a fan of the FPS genre.

Widowmaker is the most used in the defensive character category due to her superior ability to kill anything with mere suppressive sniper rifle fire. She’s a go-to standard of the FPS genre as well, along with a few different tricks up her sleeve. Reinhardt, the beta’s premiere Tank hero, proves that teamplay is obscenely important in Overwatch and that you can’t survive as the run and gunner alone. Mercy was the top support character, but that doesn’t come as a surprise considering that she’s the best healer choice, no matter how you look at it.

And a staggering 9.7 million players across 190 countries joined in on the Overwatch hype. With 4.9 BILLION minutes played and more than 37 MILLION matches played, Overwatch will undoubtedly be joining the ranks of one of the most played Esports-worthy games in recent times. It also goes without saying that, even before release, it’s killed the only challenger in the FPS MOBA genre, Team Fortress 2, without even being released yet. These numbers will only grow once the game’s released tonight and may even challenge the supremacy of Call of Duty and Counter Strike as the reigning FPS in the Online Game world. The game’s even managed to gain fans who even dislike FPS games in general like yours truly. If that isn’t any measure of how good a company Blizzard is, then I don’t know what is. Sadly, there won’t be any Steam Codes for Overwatch as it will be handled exclusively through Blizzard’s own gaming platform, Battle.net.
