Finally, the popular prequel to the original Resident Evil game gets a remastered version for Steam account users! RE: Zero takes you back to the nightmare from the 2002 release and transforms it with new HD visuals, improved sound, widescreen support and an optional modernized control system and more. It’s the best way to experience the story of what really happened before the iconic mansion incident that was the catalyst for the entire Resident Evil saga. But does is it really live up to the expectations of its fans? Find out more below!
Plot Summary for Steam Account Users
The story takes place in 1998. Unusual murders have been rampant on the outskirts of Raccoon City. S.T.A.R.S, the city’s Special Forces division, sends the Bravo Team to investigate. One rookie cop member named Rebecca Chambers stumbles upon the Ecliptic Express, a train stopped dead on the tracks, after being split up with the other members of the team. Inside the train, she meets Billy Coen, a death row convict and ex-navy Lieutenant.
Throughout the game, steam account users need to switch between the characters – Rebecca and Billy – in order to proceed with the story.
Gameplay for Steam Account Users
Basically, Resident Evil 0 plays just like the traditional Resident Evil games. Multiple characters with intersecting stories isn’t new to the franchise, but Resident Evil 0’s protagonists are on a different level. You are able to swap between them at any point in the game, and they have differing skillsets that require doing often. This ensures that you have a secondary character that can back up every time you’re stuck in a rut. When you’re not directly controlling a character, a solid AI takes over. Surprisingly, the AI is conservative with ammo and careful in how and when they fire their guns.
One major drawback that really dragged the ratings is the fact that Resident Evil 0 has no item boxes. With no item box, your only choice is to drop the items on the floor, and then retrieve them later on in the same place once you have sufficient space. You’ll often find yourself juggling limited inventory space often, dropping whatever you can spare from your inventory to make room for keys. As such, expect a huge amount of backtracking in Resident Evil 0, which can be pretty tiring most of the time.
Rating for Steam Account Users
PROS
- HD graphics.
- Two playable characters.
- Items can be dropped anywhere.
- Classic survival horror.
- Challenging gameplay.
- Good background info for Umbrella.
- Able to change costumes at any time.
CONS
- Lack of item boxes.
- Some of the worst bosses in RE history.
- Ending was a letdown, but it’s a prequel, so it doesn’t have much freedom to expand.
The game received mixed reviews, and most were disappointed with the outcome. Still, if you want to know more about the story of Resident evil before the events in the iconic mansion and the bombing of Raccoon City, then this game might just be worth checking out. Yes, there are some flaws, but it isn’t exactly that bad. Maybe fan expectations were just too high. Overall, the game is challenging, nostalgic, and it provides a good backstory to the present RE games. What do you think? Will you get the game and increase your steam account value, or will you pass on the chance to relive the horrors of Resident Evil 0?
