The story begins in a beautiful forest called Nibel. It is sustained by a magical Spirit Tree. Ori falls from this tree as a newborn and is adopted by Naru, a sasquatch-like creature that looks a lot like Baymax but with black fur and a white face. Unknown tragic events occur and Nibel deteriorates and food supply runs out. This takes a toll on Ori and he weakens. After collapsing near the Spirit Tree, he is revived by its light and power. This is when Ori meets Sein, a spiritual being who guides Ori throughout his adventure and gives Ori the power to attack enemies and defend himself. They now set off on a mission to restore and save the forest by recovering the light of the three main elements that sustains life in Nibel: Waters, Winds and Warmth.

There are three branches of skills available on Ori’s skill tree that may be leveled up. One is for combat skills and spirit flame attacks, another is to develop Ori’s senses to be able to sense hidden paths and such, and the last is for defenses and utility. The game is filled with puzzles and hidden keys to be able to access certain areas of the map. There are also health shards, energy shards, new abilities, and upgrades that Ori may pick up along the way. Energy Cells are used to create Soul Links which is the ability to save the game at any point.
